About the District

Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 1 is a political subdivision of the State of Texas responsible for the irrigation of arid and semiarid lands within its territory. The District delivers surface water from the Rio Grande River across a network of primary canals and laterals.

The District is governed by a five-member Board of Directors elected by the property owners it serves, and operates under Chapter 58 of the Texas Water Code.

Water Conservation

Water is a limited resource in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. During allocation periods, these practices help every irrigator stretch their available water.

Order water early

Place irrigation orders at least 48 hours in advance so ditch riders can schedule deliveries efficiently.

Check your gates and valves

Repair leaking turnouts and field gates. A single leaking gate can waste thousands of gallons per season.

Irrigate at the right time

Water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation losses in the Rio Grande Valley heat.

Level and maintain fields

Laser-leveled fields and maintained farm ditches deliver more of your allocation to the root zone.
